Looking back on a successful CO2 reduction event

06/17/2019

On Thursday June 13, we welcomed 52 professionals from industrial companies, with a special interest in CO2 reduction, to the Van Der Valk Hotel in Utrecht (the Netherlands) for our COreduction event.

René De Schutter and John Horn of Bilfinger Tebodin kicked-off the afternoon by welcoming our guests and discussing the importance of CO2 reduction within the industry in the coming years. As Bilfinger Tebodin was founded in 1945 to support the Dutch industry to rebuild after WWII, we see it as our obligation to support the (Dutch) industry in reshaping, via the industrial energy transition, and the industrial companies in reaching their COreduction goals.

The first two speakers were Jordi Koes of Bilfinger Tebodin and Roel Drost of Ecochain. The motto of their presentations was as follows: ‘If you can’t measure it, you can’t improve it’. With this in mind, they explained how it is possible to measure COemissions by using Hot spot analysis.

In the next presentation, Arasta Pourkamal of Bilfinger Tebodin introduced our plan for carbon footprint reduction, explaining techniques that will help us getting there. He showed four practical cases:

  • A Thermal Insulation Performance (TIP) check at a boiler house
  • An industrial heat pump for a distillation column
  • An intercooler steam boiler installation
  • A large scale CO2-capture project in which CO2 is captured from flue gasses and used in greenhouses

Niels Schoorlemmer of PNO Consultants took the floor afterwards explaining the set-up for the new SDE++. It was made clear, that as this is a new subsidy regime, there are still many uncertainties involved.

Martijn Broekhof of VNCI gave his presentation next, titled: ‘The long way to a broadly supported national climate agreement’. He began by discussing the newest insights seen from the meeting he attended in the morning at the Ministry about the climate agreement. Afterwards, Martijn explained the path from the Paris Climate Agreement in 2015 to a Dutch national climate agreement and explained the impact on the Dutch (chemical) industry. The most important takeaway from this presentation was that there would most likely not be any obligatory COreduction plans, but instead a ‘CO2 tax’.

The inspiring day ended with a lively panel discussion with a lot of interaction between the speakers and audience, followed by a drink. We would like to thank all participants in the event for this successful afternoon! A video summarizing the event will follow during the coming weeks.
