In June 2020, Europe’s largest-capacity corn and sunflower seed research base has been opened by Syngenta in Mezőtúr, in the south-eastern part of Hungary. The total investment of close to €5 million will help the company to breed innovative seeds varieties for the entire European market, responding to sustainable agriculture needs.

Syngenta is a leading global agriculture company based in Switzerland. Their seeds processing plant in Hungary is a complex of several facilities. Bilfinger Tebodin was chosen to provide the overall design and management of one of these, the new R&D station. The main profile of the new facility is corn and sunflower breeding, production and pre-market testing.

Client special requirements: safety and design

‘Bilfinger Tebodin supported us in obtaining the permit, was responsible for the detailed design of the facility, and carried out the overall project management, HSE management as well as technical supervision during construction. The HSE aspect was key for us from the very start, and we are grateful to the team for meeting our design expectations and providing a dedicated expert to ensure that highest safety standards are met on our site’ – said Robert Varga, site manager.

Bilfinger Tebodin had been executing EPCM services for this 1,600 m2 R&D center, starting from design in 2018 to the full construction and completion in 2020. Tamás Molnár, project manager: ‘Beyond the precise safety focus, the project was very special from the design perspective, too. Our team solved design tasks such as noise reduction to mitigate equipment related noise between areas, and specific cooling related requirements also had to be met to ensure optimal conditions for the seed samples. All those details make a difference to the client’s actual business, so we approached every single issue carefully.’
