A study by Tebodin shows that the European manufacturing industry holds a trump card for worldwide success. Experience, knowledge, innovative capacity, capital and technology are all present in Europe, it all comes down to implementation. There are, according to Maurice Houben, Tebodin’s director of strategy and business development, three pre-conditions for success: “Industry 4.0 is fully organized for the optimal exploitation of ‘The Internet of Things’; ‘connected’ to the nth degree, but also sustainable and extremely flexible.”
In the industry, everything is connected to everything else: processes are increasingly digitalized, and process data is shared and combined. Data from other parts of the chain can enable independent processes to be modified to achieve significant optimization. Houben: “Data will be the driving force behind the factory of the future.”
The factory of the future is powered (almost) entirely by renewable energy, specifically solar energy. Electrification will create new and potentially disruptive business models because electrical drive systems enable the redesign of industrial processes. Furthermore, circularity plays a crucial role: horizontal circularity, such as waste from end-products as raw materials for new production processes, as well as vertical circularity; reduction of harmful emissions.
The factory with the most, and sustainable, business potential, is a smaller, scalable facility that focuses on innovative and specialized products. This factory also makes direct use of data from the entire chain to enable immediate changes to be made. Its products are of high quality, locally and sustainably produced.
Tebodin’s study into the factory of the future is detailed in a white paper, with the title: ‘The three success factors for the factory of the future.’ Via this white paper, Tebodin hopes to make a valuable contribution to the development of the new industry.
