I always aimed to work in a unique field of expertise and at several exciting locations. Being an Instrumentation and Control engineer during my first job, it was difficult for me to understand what the future would bring and what kind of expertise might be required apart from academic knowledge.
Okay, so let us have a quick walk through the basics. I believe that most of you know of ICE as the heart of core engineering domains, which is defined as “a branch of engineering that studies the measurement and control of process variables, and the design and implementation of systems that incorporate them with more accuracy and efficiency.” Process variables can comprise of various parameters, viz., pressure, temperature, humidity, flow, pH, force and speed.
ICE combines two branches of engineering:
- Instrumentation engineering: the science governing the measurement and control of process variables within a production or manufacturing area
- Control engineering, also called control systems engineering: the engineering discipline that applies control theory to design systems with desired behaviors
Control engineers are responsible for the research, design, and development of control devices and systems, typically in manufacturing facilities and process plants. Control methods employ sensors to measure the output variable of the device and provide feedback to the controller so that it can make modifications towards the desired performance. Automatic control manages a device without the need of human inputs for the process control, such as, cruise control for regulating a car's speed, autopilot, PLC operated automations, building automations.
A career as an instrumentation and control engineer has been very challenging and rewarding, and looking back at my 14 years of experience that I have gained so far, I look forward to develop myself in a more defined way with lots of national and international exposure.
My new job
Recently, I completed four months successfully in my new job at Bilfinger Tebodin and I am happy to share the joy with my colleagues, friends and family. I have realized that instrumentation and control engineering is an exciting field to work in. Furthermore, coupled with the fact that the equally enthusiastic colleagues and a perfect company contribute significantly to your growth, Bilfinger Tebodin is undoubtedly a great platform where one can develop sound technical skills.
Indeed this month marks the completion of my fourth month in Bilfinger Tebodin, and I always been keen on taking up challenges that includes working in different projects, getting exposed to Oil and Gas, Food & Pharma, Chemical-based market. Now, I can proudly claim that I play a significant role in projects in these markets. The organization and the people, play an important role in this by providing me different opportunities and exposure during this short span of time.
Getting to know my new colleagues
I will never forget my first day at the office in Velsen (the Netherlands). Since I am from India, a different country and culture, I was initially intimidated due to the sudden transition. I was quite confident however about my decision, since I had read many positive stories about the company online and also some past experience in the Netherlands. However, I was yet to discover about the culture and people.
To my surprise, I was given a very warm welcome at the office by my buddy and I have had a sense of comfort since day one. I was then introduced to my potential team members and colleagues from other disciplines, after which I was handed over my work laptop. It all happened in one day! YES! Furthermore I got a chance to read some technical material and good orientation trainings.
What else do you need?
After a few days of orientation and trainings, the moment came where I had to get started with actual work. The way of working is systematic and straightforward. This makes the job easier and more fun. I started learning new skills from day one. Within Bilfinger Tebodin, a lot is possible and one can easily find a place when you’re ready to take the challenges and like to grow within the company.
